GFCI outlets are outlets installed around wet areas to help protect people from getting electrocuted.  These outlets are installed in kitchens, bathrooms, garages, outdoor outlets, around swimming pools and spas.

There are 2 little buttons on the front of the outlet to TEST and RESET.  This is generally how you test the outlet to make sure it is working.  At the time of inspection, the inspector will use a special outlet tester and GFCI tester to make sure the outlet is working properly.  Occasionally the outlet will trip when testing the button on the front of the outlet but does not trip when tested with the special outlet tester.  If this happens, the outlet should be replaced.
